Why electricity shutdown happened in Pakistan?

More than half of Pakistan faced power breakdown on Monday following a shutdown in National grid, left millions of people without electricity. Almost all of the main cities, Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Islamabad, as well as Peshawar was out of power for more than 16 hours.

The Minister of Power Khurram Dastgir said that this grid was because of grid failure following a frequency variation. The last major breakout took hours to restore in October 2021 while electricity had still not been restored in some areas of Pakistan from yesterday morning.

The power and energy Minister of Pakistan said that the grid experienced a lot of frequency at 7; 30 am on Monday that caused a major breakdown. He said that this was not major crises and the department is working on it we will soon restore all the energy sources and make sure to provide full time electricity for public.

He said that we usually turned off the electricity power generation system at night because in winter, there is almost no use of electricity at high voltage in night. As soon we turned on the generation system in morning, the system got tripped off because of voltage fluctuation.

The power generation system somewhere between Dadu and Jamshoro got shut down due to frequency variation and it resulted in power breakdown in whole country.

Mismanagement in electricity department

Pakistan often suffers power cut down because of mismanagement and lack of infrastructure. The people of Pakistan are now used to dealing with sudden fluctuation and load shedding.

Pakistan along with financial, economic, political and educational crises, facing electricity crises also. The government and official leaders of Pakistan are busy in dealing with party conflicts and fighting over power while the people of Pakistan are facing severe shortage of energy. Some of the factors causing power crises are:

  • Low gas supply and more dependence on oil
  • Over population and over usage
  • Low investments in energy field
  • Insufficient supply for public

These are all the reasons caused because of mismanagement from government and concerned authorities. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) was continuously warning government about the crises. There was a lot of voices on media reporting about electricity shortage, still government has not put any effort in saving the country from this backlash.

More than thousands of people suffered because of power cut down in Pakistan. The political leaders of Pakistan, should pay some attention to solve this energy crises in this modern age, rather than paying attention to elections only.
