3. Squid Game
A truly international hit, Squid Game is a gloomy story that was originally written in Korean but has English dubs. With the promise of a substantial sum of money for the victor, a group of strangers compete in a series of children’s games with a lethal twist, only one of whom will survive.
4. Peaky Blinders
Extremely well-acted and frighteningly violent, Peaky Blinders is a period crime drama largely based on the Shelby crime family. Shortly after World War I, the Shelbys, a famed Irish crime family, penetrated and uprooted high-class society at the height of its wealth and magnificence. Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), the commander of Peaky Blinders, must establish and retain his position through the use of intimidation and cruelty. Disclaimer though, this isn’t an appropriate show for children.
5. The Crown
In a dramatic depiction of the royal family’s history, we learn how they dealt with the political and personal upheaval that surrounded them, with historical facts added for emphasis. The Crown is ultimately about what it means to be a king in an era in which the title is primarily ceremonial, as portrayed by a stellar cast and executed in brilliant fashion. Queen Elizabeth’s power is in her inaction, and yet the performance remains enthralling.
