International Day of Tolerance: UAE ‘an Oasis of Co-existence’

International Day of Tolerance

Oasis of Tolerance and Coexistence

The UAE has expanded to include more than 200 nationalities, making it an oasis of tolerance and coexistence between all facets of society, locals and expats of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, and providing a decent life to enjoy a life full of love, peace, and serenity.

For societies to be stable and for their progress to continue, tolerance is a fundamental requirement. To establish peace, tolerance, and openness in current Arab societies, it is vital to reconstruct their intellectual and cultural traditions.

Sheikh Zayed’s Vision For Tolerance

The distinctive qualities of Sheikh Zayed, may God rest his soul, the country’s founding father, include: “He was tolerant with himself and calls all people around him to be tolerant with themselves, accept others, and coexist with them regardless of their colours, religions, or beliefs.” He also used his compassionate fatherly style, wisdom, and pleasant words that he says with ease and spontaneity to affect the hearts and minds of his listeners. As a result, a rich and endless heritage of love, tolerance, and compassion is left behind. In doing so, he sent a clear message to the world’s leaders, demonstrating that true leadership goes beyond pursuing political and financial objectives to fostering ideals of love, peace, and coexistence among people.

The Year of Tolerance

The year 2019 had been proclaimed the Year of Tolerance by the late H. H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed (15 December 2018). The announcement intended to emphasise the UAE as a global leader in tolerance and its commitment, since its founding, to serving as a conduit for dialogue between people of all cultural backgrounds in a setting that rejects extremism and places an emphasis on accepting the other.

The Year of Tolerance was based on five main pillars: to deepen the values of tolerance and coexistence among cultures by instilling these values in young people; to solidify the UAE as the global capital for tolerance through a series of initiatives, projects, and dialogues between various cultures and civilisations; to implement multiple cultural programmes and contribute to the creation of tolerant communities; and to concentrate on legislative and policy-oriented goals that will

22nd International Day of Tolerance

H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid designated the pedestrian bridge crossing the Dubai Canal as the Tolerance Bridge in November 2017. On the 22nd International Day of Tolerance, the announcement was made. In the UAE, where people of more than 200 nationalities coexist peacefully without experiencing racism, prejudice, or intolerance, tolerance is reflected in the name as a core virtue.

Mariam Umm Eisa Mosque

The Islamic civilization is fundamentally based on tolerance. All levels—individual, organisational, and national—are affected. The UAE society has been an undeniable example of being a tolerant and inclusive nation, with more than 200 ethnicities coexisting peacefully and productively in the country. The Federal Government is working hard to promote acceptance and understanding as fundamental social principles right now.

H. H. Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, ordered the Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Mosque in Al Mushrif, Abu Dhabi, to be renamed “Mariam, Umm Eisa,” which is Arabic for “Mary, the mother of Jesus.”

Minister of Cooperation and Tolerance

When H. H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced structural changes to the 12th Cabinet in 2016, it reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to eradicating ideological, cultural, and religious bigotry in society. This was the first time the position of Minister of State for Tolerance was created. First to hold the position of Minister of State for Tolerance was Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi.

His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan was named a cabinet member and the UAE’s Minister of Tolerance at the 2017 cabinet reshuffle.
