Imran Khan legal cases

Imran Khan legal cases

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, has been languishing in prison since August 2023 due to numerous criminal cases. The papers include alleged corruption, state gifts, a diplomatic cable and protest violence. This guide on  Imran Khan legal cases clarifies and distinguishes between those convictions that are active and those that have been overturned or suspended. This is a current report as of October 12, 2026.

A Large Number, But No Single List

Reuters reported in August 2026 that Khan has been charged with over 100 crimes. They cover numerous police reports and various courts. That’s not an admission of guilt and wrongdoing is denied.

The Main Cases

The £190 million Al-Qadir Trust case

An accountability court on Jan. 17, 2025, handed down a 14-year sentence to Khan and seven years to his wife, Bushra Bibi. The couple was accused of receiving up to Rs7 billion (about $25 million) of land from the Al-Qadir Trust in exchange for £190 million repatriated to Pakistan from Britain. Khan appealed. His appeal was adjourned by the Islamabad High Court on October 6, 2026, when his counsel requested a meeting with the court, Dawn reported.

Toshakhana: several gift cases

These are not one case, but separate. In 2023, the Toshakhana-ECP case resulted in a three-year sentence, but it was suspended. In January 2024, Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in a different Toshakhana-Graff case, suspended until overturned on appeal.

At Toshkhana-2, where they were connected with a Bulgari jewellery set, both the women were sentenced to 17 years on December 20, 2025. The set, which is worth Rs80 million, was purchased for Rs2.9 million, prosecutors said. They lodged an appeal and asked for a suspension. Khan was serving time for the Al-Qadir and Bulgari cases in September 2026 and the two ECP and Graff sentences were suspended.

Cipher and marriage cases: convictions overturned

In the case of the cipher, Khan was jailed for 10 years in January 2024 for a classified diplomatic cable. He was acquitted in the Islamabad High Court in June 2024, but the federal government appealed the acquittal in the Supreme Court. The pair of Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to seven years in February 2024 for breaking the Islamic waiting period before marriage in their unlawful-marriage case. They were acquitted of the charges in July 2024.

May 9 and other proceedings

After Khan’s arrest on May 9, 2023, protests turned violent and state and military sites were attacked. He faces anti-terrorism proceedings linked to the unrest, including the GHQ attack case. A separate case over clashes at Islamabad’s Federal Judicial Complex in March 2023 remained active on October 6, 2026, when an anti-terrorism court ordered authorities to produce Khan at the next hearing.

What Matters Now

The cases have different legal status: some sentences were suspended, some convictions were overturned, and others remain under appeal or trial. Court orders- not political claims- will determine their legal outcome. This covers the main reported cases, not every proceeding Khan says has been filed against him.
