French Students Launch New Protests As Around 200 Schools Close Nationwide

The French student protest drew thousands onto the streets on Tuesday, with demonstrators calling for higher education funding and better study conditions. The Interior Ministry counted 161,500 participants nationwide, including 41,500 in Paris, while youth unions put turnout at nearly 480,000.

Why the French Student Protest Is Spreading

The Education Ministry reported 214 school closures, and the Higher Education Ministry said 35% of institutions faced disruption. A student union separately claimed that 90% of faculties were blockaded or closed.

Government Response and Public Debate

Education Minister Edouard Geffray told lawmakers that 88,000 high school students had joined the government’s consultation platform. The high school students’ union confirmed that it would meet him on Thursday, which keeps a channel for dialogue open.

President Emmanuel Macron urged demonstrators to stay calm and respect people and property. The movement also opposes the Parcoursup university admissions platform, and the CGT union has called for a nationwide day of strikes on 5 November.
