Punjab Government Schools Explore AI Education As New Opportunity For Students

Punjab AI education

Under the Sarbat, Punjab has introduced Punjab AI education as a mainstream subject in government and affiliated schools, and the initiative is for Classes 1-12 and aims to provide early exposure to AI, problem-solving and responsible use of technology to students.

The program is expected to cover some 31.5 lakh students across 25,172 schools, and this massive initiative brings AI education into the mainstream school curriculum and creates an opportunity to boost digital learning throughout Punjab.

AI Curriculum To Be Introduced In Phases

The first phase of the initiative is for Classes 8 to 12, where AI will be integrated into the mandatory Computer Science curriculum through live online classes, recorded lessons, projects, assessments and a dedicated Learning Management System. In the second phase, students of Classes 1 to 7 will be taught age-appropriate foundational concepts on AI.

Another important part of the program is the preparation of the teachers. Initially, around 12,424 computer science teachers will be trained, and gradually more than two lakh teachers in different subjects will be trained, it said.

Leading The Way In Responsible AI Learning

The curriculum is based on international practices and follows the UNESCO Ethical AI Framework. This approach emphasises not only the understanding of emerging technology, but also its responsible and knowledgeable application.

For government schools in Punjab, wider AI education can expose students to skills that are becoming more and more important in technology-driven industries, and good teacher training, practical learning and regular access to digital resources will continue to be important in translating the program into meaningful classroom outcomes.
