General Asim Munir, the Chief of Army Staff, made his first significant reorganisation two days after taking the helm on Thursday. He unexpectedly chose a member of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) corps to head the army’s media branch.
According to many military sources, Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif has taken over for Lt Gen Babar Iftikhar as director general of Inter-Services Public Relations.
However, Gen. Sharif’s appointment has not been formally confirmed by Inter-Services Public Relations.
Who is Gen Sharif?
Previously, Gen. Sharif served as the director of the Defense Science and Technology Organization (DESTO), a covert agency that conducted scientific and technological studies and developed weapons systems in the fields of aerodynamics, propulsion and propellants, and avionics. He apparently also worked in the department of Military Operations.

Although Maj Gen Sharif will be the first commander from the EME Corps to assume the role, the selection of an engineer as ISPR chief is not unique.
Maj Gen Jehangir Nasrullah of the Corps of Engineers held this position earlier in 1991.
New ISPR DG
People are watching the appointment of the new ISPR DG with considerable interest because many saw it as an indication that the new army chief would make significant changes to how the military’s media wing operates.
The shift was inevitable because Lt Gen Iftikhar was recently upgraded to the rank of three-star general, which is the status required for the ISPR DG position.
According to reports, Lt Gen Iftikhar, who had been appointed commander of the V Corps, will now go to Karachi to take the place of Lt Gen Mohammad Saeed.
