The China Market Rawalpindi corridor reached a milestone on 4 November, when Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Barrister Danyal Chaudhry laid the foundation stone for the reconstruction and modernisation of the China Market-Gordon College Road transit corridor. The project will be carried out under a provincial development grant of PKR 138.318 million.

The execution has been entrusted to the specialised engineering divisions of the Communication and Works Department with a view to high-grade work and fast-track completion. The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting walk led by Barrister Danyal, business leaders and residents.

Improved Drainage And Relief Of Traffic

Barrister Danyal said traffic bottlenecks of multi-decades would be removed, micro-logistics would improve for the commercial hub and daily commutes for students attending central educational institutions would be eased under the project. Upgraded urban roads are key to the provincial government’s student-centric and economic development framework, he said.

The engineering design features a rebuilt sub-base to accommodate heavy commercial traffic and public transit volumes. To avoid monsoon flooding in Liaquat Road, Naya Mohalla and the adjoining market areas, integrated subsurface stormwater drainage channels are planned.

Wider Roads Improvements, National Development Drive

At the same time, similar fast-tracked rehabilitation projects are underway on Rawal Road, 5th Road and Railway Workshop Road, indicating a city-wide approach to urban renewal. This kind of joined-up working can reduce disruption and provide a consistent experience for traders and commuters.

Development priorities are of a national character. Balochistan reports a decision to protect infrastructure and development, a message of military leadership on protection of development and the resumption of train services after a three-day suspension. Community-centric efforts included planning of the polio drive and building public trust, and restructuring of the community-led housing fund.

Policy Priorities In Urban Road Renewal

The central policy question is how to obtain lasting benefits from road reconstruction rather than temporary relief. Clear timelines, regular public updates and independent quality checks would help make sure the new sub-base and drainage work as designed through monsoon seasons.

Maintenance budgets, traffic management plans during construction and a pedestrian-friendly design for students would add further value. The corridor can be a model for other commercial districts of Punjab with a blend of good engineering and regular maintenance.
