Pakistan's Economy: 2.5% Growth Over Sectoral Shifts

The National Accounts Committee NAC has down revised the GDP growth estimate for Pakistan FY 2023-24 to 2.50 percent from earlier estimate of 2.52 percent. The adjustment comes at a time that different sectors of the economy have posted mixed performances.

The agricultural sector, however, although having higher growth rates of 17.12% in the important crops, dropped overall to 6.18%, mainly pulled down by poor performance in forestry. The industrial sector was also a challenge area as it contracted deeper to -1.65 percent. Contraction was recorded primarily in mining and quarrying sub-sector mainly due to the dismal performance of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan’s coal and limestone industries.

However, the sectors that showed a positive performance were observed in the services sector with signs of enhanced performance in many subsectors. Transport services increased to 2.12 percent while information and communication services improved significantly rising to 3.45 percent. The educational services also recorded high growth rate of 9.05 percent to the sector’s overall growth of 2.35 percent.
