Daily Covid mortality rate jumps 140pc

The government’s focal person for controlling Covid-19 in the country Federal Minister Asad Umar said that the Covid-19 mortality rate has jumped by 140 percent as total deaths related to the coronavirus rose in the last week jumped to 12.

“Last week, daily Covid mortality [rate] was 12. This is a 140pc increase vs a few weeks back,” Asad Umar said in a tweet while warning the country-men that if they fail to follow standard operating procedures, the number will only increase in the coming days.

He said that refusal to follow the SOPs and wearing masks will only increase the infections in the coming months and undo all of the hard work done in the last three months to control the pandemic

Earlier in the last week, Umar while sharing the figures said “national positivity of Covid cases yesterday (Oct 14) was 2.37 percent. This is the highest positivity rate in more than 50 days. The last time this level was seen was on August 23.”

Reiterating Asad’s views, Federal Minister Shireen Mazari also said that people were not following the SOPs. “Sadly people have stopped wearing masks in all public places, especially markets, offices, restaurants etc,” she said.

“It is an act of extreme selfishness not to wear masks as you endanger not only yourself but also your family, associates, workers, and everyone you come into contact with,” she added.

Covid related fatalities have risen over the last two weeks after falling to lows in the month of September.

Prime Minister Imran Khan also warned that a second wave could be imminent with rising levels of pollution.

“I fear that in these two months — October and November […] cities like Faisalabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Gujranwala where there is more pollution […] there might be a second spike in coronavirus cases. The cases are rising gradually and we hope that they don’t increase quickly; we are monitoring it,” PM Khan said.
