An Attempted Assassination on PTI Chairman
The interior ministry on Thursday urged the Punjab government to form a high-level joint investigative team (JIT) “to bring facts to light” following an attempted assassination on PTI Chairman Imran Khan in Wazirabad.
The federal government has contacted the Punjab government about this, according to a statement released late on Thursday. Senior police officers and intelligence people were requested in the communiqué to be a part of the JIT.
Credible and Transparent Inquiry
Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had earlier stated that the JIT should be composed of senior officials for a “credible and transparent inquiry” into the incident during a press conference with Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.
He also guaranteed the provincial government the center’s “full cooperation” with the investigation.
Unauthorised Release of Assailant’s Confessional Video
The minister further attributed the security breach that might have caused the firing to the Punjab government. He blamed the provincial administration as well for the unauthorised release of the assailant’s confessional video.
He criticised PTI leaders Asad Umar and Shireen Mazari for accusing senior military and government figures for the tragedy without providing any evidence or supporting documentation.

Encouraging People to Attack Politician’s Homes
You also do not dwell in the skies, Mr. Sanaullah chided PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry for reportedly encouraging people to attack opposition politicians’ homes. “Violence breeds violence, and the fire you start will consume you as well.”
The minister confirmed that the PTI chairman was the target of threats to his life, but he also said that he was protected by impenetrable security measures. In the wake of the incident, he also counselled the PTI leader to alter his course of conduct.
Inspector General of Police
He said that he had requested a report from the Punjab government, the chief secretary, and the inspector general of police on the prime minister’s instructions.
Ms. Aurangzeb asked the public and the media to refrain from making speculative claims and reckless assertions. She vehemently denounced the firing and wished Mr. Khan and other PTI leaders a speedy recovery.
Gujrat Police Station
The suspect has been detained, according to Ms. Aurangzeb, and a Gujrat police station has recorded his statement.
The minister also urged the populace to refrain from “politicising the tragedy” and making “irresponsible comments” because doing so might trigger an unfortunate incident.
