In a major development for Pakistan, the Republic of Cuba has placed an offer to establish a vaccine production facility in Pakistan to ramp up efforts to enhance its pharmaceutical industry.
Zener Javier Caro Gonzalez – Ambassador of Cuba – proposed this during his meetup with the Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Shibli Faraz.
This development was informed by the Ministry of Science and Technology in a statement on Wednesday.
The proposal of a vaccine production facility, if accepted, will aid Pakistan in its efforts to control the coronavirus pandemic, as the country’s pharmaceutical and biotech industry is underdeveloped and produces very few vaccines.

Cuba and Pakistan also discussed the measures taken by their respective governments to fight the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cuba’s health regulator gave the go-ahead on Friday after Abdala’s makers, last month, announced that the vaccine was 92% effective at preventing Covid-19 disease after three shots.
Pakistan has mainly relied on China for the bulk supply of vaccines – Sinopharm, CanSinoBio and Sinovac jabs. It has also received Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna vaccines under the international COVAX program.
Pakistan started the vaccination campaign in February.
The pace of the vaccination drive, in recent weeks, has accelerated because of the presence of the Indian variant, Delta, stoked fears of a fourth wave of the disease. This, according to experts, could be more dangerous than the previous ones.
More than 20 million vaccine doses have been given across the country. This includes more than 4 million doses of the vaccine administered to people over the age of 18 during this month alone, as per the NCOC.
Pakistan has witnessed a resurgence of coronavirus cases in recent days. A total of 22,642 people have perished from coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic in Pakistan.
Last month, Pakistan began producing the single-dose CanSinoBio COVID-19 vaccine with the help of China. Pakistan successfully achieved the target of administering 500,000 vaccine doses per day, Planning Minister Asad Umar announced
