Ukrainian energy sites
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reported that Russian missiles and drones hit six Ukrainian energy sites within hours of US President Donald Trump announcing an immediate energy ceasefire. The targets included power facilities, gas production infrastructure and a privately owned civilian gas station in Kharkiv.
Ukrainian Energy Sites Struck After Ceasefire Announcement
The strikes caused blackouts in Izium and power cuts across Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia, while 33 people were injured nationwide. A separate drone strike on a residential building in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district killed one person and injured 11.
Conflicting Signals on the Truce
The truce was announced over the weekend after a move to waive sanctions on Russian diesel to ease US fuel prices. Zelensky said Ukraine had observed the pause and did not strike Russian energy targets, calling the attacks “Putin’s answer to President Trump”.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov remarked that Ukraine does not deserve a ceasefire respite, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said contacts were ongoing without confirming that Moscow had accepted the deal. The mixed messages show how fragile the diplomatic picture remains, and the debate over planned EU sanctions on Russia adds further pressure to the wider discussion.
Why Pakistan’s Balanced Diplomacy Stands Out
Pakistan has consistently favoured dialogue and de-escalation, a position that suits an energy-importing economy exposed to global price swings. Its approach is reflected in the renewed Pak-Russia commitment to strategic cooperation, which sits alongside strong ties with Western and Gulf partners.
Peace efforts also matter closely to Islamabad, as seen in the Kremlin’s comments on a possible Putin-Trump meeting and the trade war remarks on Russian fertiliser and uranium imports. Wider shifts in Moscow’s partnerships, including the Syria-Russia deal on Mediterranean military facilities, show why Pakistan’s measured diplomacy and calls for negotiated solutions remain valuable.
