Ready to listen to Jahangir Tareen: PM Khan

SARGODHA: Prime Minister Imran Khan has, on Wednesday, assured the nation that the government was working to protect its interest.  

He was talking to media persons after kickstarting a project of yet another low-cost housing unit under the Naya Pakistan Housing Programme in Sargodha. 

When questioned about the latest stance of Jahangir Tareen, the premier said that sugar mill owners stole Rs126 to Rs140 billion from the pockets of the poor people by increasing the per kg price of sugar by Rs26 in a year.

The prime minister said that he was ready to hear the reservations of Jahangir Tareen and the PTI’s like-minded group MNAs and MPAs.

“I am all set to listen to everyone but people should keep in mind why this all happened,” he said. “If anyone has any reservations or grievances, we can have a look into it.”

He said that the government probed into the sugar scam through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), which brought forth a startling report showing how the mill owners had minted money by evading taxes and increasing the prices.

The prime minister reiterated his stance of having the same law for the poor and the rich. He said that there could not be different laws for the powerful and weak as this is how destruction in a society occurs. He linked the progress and prosperity of a nation with the rule of law and its application to everyone. Replying to a question regarding the grant of bail to Mian Shahbaz Sharif, Khan said the corrupt rulers had stolen billions of rupees from the national kitty. “There is irrefutable evidence about their corruption but unless our society decides to grip the corrupt, no change can take place,” he said, asking, “Name a country where rule of law is prevalent and it is still reeling in poverty?”
