Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government of sabotaging sincere negotiations, and the debate over KP government peace efforts has moved to the centre of national politics. According to state officials and media briefings, he told a federal cabinet meeting that Chief Minister Sohail Afridi rejected a finalised consensus draft agreement at the eleventh hour.

KP Government Peace Efforts Face Federal Criticism

Federal ministers, including Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, have described the provincial approach as deliberate indifference towards rising militancy. The federal government alleges that counter-terrorism funding was diverted to organise protest marches towards Islamabad rather than to equip local security forces.

Constitutional Steps Taken by Islamabad

After the talks collapsed, President Asif Ali Zardari approved the federal cabinet’s recommendation to invoke Articles 232(1) and 234(1) of the Constitution. The measures impose a state of emergency and Governor’s rule, with control passing to the federally appointed governor, as covered in Pakistan Seriously Considers Emergency In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Amid Security Concerns.

The government presents the step as a lawful response to a worsening security situation and as a way to protect citizens. Both provisions sit within the constitutional framework, which also requires parliamentary approval.

PTI Response and the Path Back to Dialogue

PTI leaders and supporters have condemned the intervention, arguing that it is a politically motivated attempt to undermine their electoral mandate and silence calls for Imran Khan’s release, and a petition challenging the emergency measures has been filed in the Peshawar High Court.

Court review and parliamentary scrutiny give the process a legal path for settling the dispute. A durable outcome would rest on renewed dialogue, transparent use of counter-terrorism funds and a clear timeline for restoring normal provincial governance.
