A couple surprised everyone recently by celebrating their wedding with only street children as guests.
Usman Ashraf, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s district Bannu, and his wife Dr Natasha Rizwan tied the knot recently but what made a headline out of the event was the fact that they decided to limit their wedding celebrations to street children only.
In an interview, Ashraf said that during the time of COVID-19, gatherings are unwise and it seemed appropriate to carry forth with a small celebration with children who deserved it.
He added that loved ones and close family members should always be included in weddings and celebrations, but, at the same time, it is also very important to include people who are usually overlooked by society – like street children.
The guests at the couple’s valima were from Each One Teach One Foundation’s street school. This is an NGO that caters to educating and refining out of school children.
The unconventional valima celebration instantly became a smash with the public, with social media users sharing videos of it and sending the couple love and appreciation for their simple and real celebration. The couple said that simple weddings in society should be normalised and extravagant expenses should be avoided.
