Aurangzeb economic reforms

Aurangzeb economic reforms were outlined by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, who said sustained structural and policy changes are essential to turn short-term macroeconomic stability into durable growth. The aim is to move away from boom-and-bust cycles driven by heavy reliance on imports and consumption.

Aurangzeb Economic Reforms Aim for Export-Led Growth

Targets for FY27 include $5.5 billion in IT exports and $44 billion in workers’ remittances. Such goals show a clear shift towards earning foreign exchange through skills, services and overseas Pakistanis.

Tax, Energy and State-Owned Enterprise Priorities

Plans include broadening the tax base, improving tax administration and raising the tax-to-GDP ratio without adding undue pressure on salaried people. Measures such as abolishing the super tax and reducing tax slabs support that approach.

Lower energy costs are also a priority to improve competitiveness, including talks on supplying surplus electricity to industry at roughly PKR 23 per unit. Reform of state-owned enterprises continues through privatisation of designated entities and closure of unviable ones, such as the Utility Stores Corporation, PASCO and PWD.

Fiscal Discipline and Human Capital Complete the Agenda

Maintaining primary surpluses, lowering financing costs, extending debt maturities and keeping to the frameworks agreed under the IMF programme remain central to stability. Stronger reserves would support that discipline, as discussed in Will Bigger Reserves Strengthen Pakistan’s Economy?

Population growth of around 2.55 per cent is being addressed through women’s education and higher female workforce participation, currently about 22.7 per cent. Steady delivery on these reforms would help Pakistan turn stability into jobs, exports and lasting prosperity.
