Islamabad Hospitals Report 1,249 Vacant Medical Posts Amid Staffing Concerns

Islamabad hospital vacancies

According to official figures presented in the Senate by the Federal Ministry of Health, there are 1,249 Islamabad hospital vacancies in federal health care facilities in the capital city of Islamabad. The figures give a clear picture of the staffing needs and show that the ministry is ready to put the numbers before Parliament.

Islamabad Hospital Vacancies Reach 1,249 Posts

This transparency allows legislators and the public to track progress, and it allows recruitment to be focused where the pressure is greatest. The data includes doctors, nurses and paramedical staff; the three groups that are the bedrock of daily patient care.

Biggest Staffing Shortages Found At PIMS

Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences is the most impacted, where only 467 doctors are working against the approved positions of 852. There are also 363 nursing vacancies and 215 unfilled paramedical posts, adding pressure on a major public hospital.

On the gazetted side, progress is visible. Of the 883 vacant gazetted posts, 479 have been filled, and the remaining 404 have been advertised by the Federal Public Service Commission. Thus, more than half the posts have been filled, showing that the recruitment drive is gaining momentum.

Other Federal Facilities Had Smaller Shortfalls.

Sheikh Zayed Postgraduate Medical Institute reports shortfalls of 131 doctor positions, 129 nursing posts and 163 paramedical positions. The Federal Government Polyclinic has a shortfall of 90 doctor posts, 45 nursing posts and 104 paramedical positions, or 239 vacancies in all.

Federal General Hospital is short of 10 doctors and 27 nursing posts, while the National Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine is short of 17 to 29 medical and support positions. In the District Health Office, 8 vacant posts are available for doctors and 6 for nursing. Such gaps can be filled more quickly once approvals are in place.

Rekrutierung Auf Zwei Gleisen

Hiring is proceeding on two fronts, the ministry said. Direct recruitment cases (non-gazetted posts) are being coordinated with the Finance Division for issuance of a No-Objection Certificate from the Austerity Committee for the financial year 2026-27.

The FPSC is at present selecting for gazetted posts in BPS-16 and above. The rest of the advertisements and recommendations are under process for PIMS, Polyclinic and Federal General Hospital. There are also regular departmental promotion meetings to fill promotional quotas.

Policy Priorities For Fast-Tracking Appointments

The key policy question is the speed of conversion of the Austerity Committee approval into appointments to non-gazetted posts. A clear timetable for that approval, together with early publication of recruitment schedules, would give certainty to hospitals and candidates.

The institutions of Pakistan are popular for their public recruitment drives, as we can see in PAF Airmen Jobs 2026. By applying the same discipline to health posts and prioritising PIMS where the gap in doctors is largest, the quality of patient services could be raised across the capital. Predictable promotions would also serve to retain new appointees in the service.

If Parliament were regularly told about filled and pending posts, lawmakers could compare the results with the figures now on record. Such routine reporting would show Pakistan’s health institutions strengthening their workforce step by step.
