Why Is The Government Defending Governor’s Rule In KP As A Last Resort?

KP Governors rule history

KP Governors rule history

Governors rule in KP has been defended by the federal government as a last resort, following what it describes as a severe breakdown in law and order and escalating terrorism. The measures were imposed under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, with the government saying the provincial administration had refused to cooperate.

Governors Rule in KP Defended Under the Constitution

Under Article 234, the federal government asserted that intervention became necessary because the provincial government was no longer able to function in accordance with the Constitution. The step is presented as a lawful and carefully considered response, as covered in PM Accuses KP Government Of Undermining Peace Efforts.

Security Concerns Cited by Islamabad

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and federal ministers pointed to a sharp rise in militant attacks, including drone-assisted assaults on police posts. They also alleged that the provincial setup had failed to strengthen counter-terrorism bodies such as the Counter Terrorism Department.

Federal authorities further alleged that provincial resources and personnel were used to support protest marches towards Islamabad rather than to maintain local order. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif argued that the capital could not be left vulnerable to repeated armed incursions, or the province allowed to become a launchpad for anti-state elements.

Dialogue, Governance and the Way Forward

According to the federal administration, several rounds of talks aimed at tackling terror threats jointly collapsed after provincial representatives withdrew from negotiations. The government maintains that the decision followed the failure of dialogue rather than preceding it.

The political tension has continued, with the provincial chief minister criticising the governor’s security meeting, as reported in KP CM Afridi criticises PPP Governor. Parliamentary approval, court review and renewed dialogue would give the process legitimacy and help restore stable, elected governance in the province.
