TikTok Now, new app feature

TikTok is discontinuing a built-in function that closely resembles the social media platform BeReal.

The function, known as TikTok Now, was recently introduced in September and provided users with daily prompts to capture 10-second videos or pictures using both the front and back cameras of their smartphones.

TikTok announced on Tuesday that it had notified users about the discontinuation of the feature. However, users will still have access to their previously created posts using TikTok Now.

TikTok spokesperson Zachary Kizer stated, “We’re enthusiastic about utilizing the feedback we’ve received from TikTok Now as we continue to develop ways for the TikTok community to create and connect through shared entertainment.”

BeReal Platform popularity

BeReal was gaining popularity among users when TikTok Now was launched. The BeReal app encouraged users to capture photos spontaneously, aiming to depict more authentic experiences and deviating from the commonly seen meticulously edited posts on platforms like Instagram.

Snapchat and Instagram introduced similar features last year following its popularity, but the sustained interest of users in a more genuine experience remains uncertain.

According to the market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, despite its growth, only 9% of users accessed the app daily during the third quarter of the previous year. In contrast, BeReal reported having 20 million daily active users in April.
