Babar surges past Gayle’s record

Babar reached the 7,000-run milestone in his 189th inning – breaking Chris Gayle’s record of achieving the total in his 192nd inning.

The Pakistani captain has shown over the years what it takes to be a successful batsman across all formats. On Sunday, the best batsman for his side breezed across another milestone, becoming the fastest batsman to get to 7,000 runs in the T20s. He got to this feat in a match in the National T20 Cup – between Central Punjab and Southern Punjab in Rawalpindi.

He reached the 7,000-run mark when he surged past 25 runs during his side’s chase of 120. Azam, in the process, broke Gayle’s record of getting 7,000 runs in T20 cricket, taking just 187 innings. Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli reached the milestone in his 212th innings.

Of these 7,000 runs, Azam scored 2,204 runs in international matches in 61 innings at an average of 46.89. He scored one century and 20 half-centuries. He has scored 3,058 runs in franchise cricket, including 84 games across the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) as well England’s Vitality Blast.

He beat Kohli by a total margin of four innings.

Azam, in just 52 innings, scored his fastest 2,000 runs. Kohli managed to do so in 56 innings.

He also became the 11th player worldwide to score 2,000 runs in T20Is.

Azam hammered his sixth T20 ton last week – making a record for the most T20 tons by a Pakistani batsman.
