Pakistan’s former Chief Justice Saqib Nisar arrived in Lahore last night, dismissing recent allegations against him as ‘baseless’. Nisar landed at Lahore airport, where he briefly addressed the media, Express News reported.
‘I have returned to Pakistan. The allegations circulating on social media are false. I will not respond to them’, he declared.
His return follows his announcement in September that he was returning to Pakistan amid growing questions about his alleged links to former ISI chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed and his role in the events of 9 May.
A journalist revealed details of a telephone conversation with Nisar on a television programme last month. The journalist said that investigations into Nisar’s actions, and in particular his handling of the Top City housing affair, were on the increase.
According to the journalist, Nisar was questioned about allegations suggesting that he had not only dismissed the Top City case, but had also destroyed related files. In response, Nisar said: ‘As a judge, I made decisions based on the record and what I thought was correct.
When questioned about his alleged links with Faiz Hameed and his role in the 9 May incidents, Nisar became visibly agitated, saying: ‘I am not responsible for these matters’.
The reporter also claimed that the evidence against Nisar had accumulated, which had motivated his departure for London. Mr Nisar, however, claimed that his trip was a routine one.
This comes at a time when the former director general of the ISI, Faiz Hameed, was recently arrested and placed under military detention, along with three retired officers, as part of an ongoing court martial.
