The Salma Butt Punjab Minister oath was administered on Thursday, 23 October 2026, when Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan swore her in at the Governor House in Lahore. She now leads the Food Safety and Consumer Protection Department, with the appointment notified on 21 October under Article 132 of the Constitution.

Salma Butt Punjab Minister Oath Marks a New Role

Butt previously served as Special Assistant to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on the same subject, so the elevation brings continuity to the portfolio. She is a member of the Provincial Assembly on a women’s reserved seat, W-307.

Fresh Leadership at the Food Department

Alongside her elevation, Captain (Retd) Muhammad Waseem was appointed as the new Director General Food and Cane Commissioner, Punjab. The two decisions give the department fresh leadership at both the political and administrative levels.

Food supply and food safety work closely together in a province as large as Punjab. Coordinated leadership can help inspections, supply management and public services move in step.

Food Safety as a Public Priority

Food safety and consumer protection touch every household, from the quality of everyday products to fair treatment in the market, and strong inspection systems, regulatory enforcement and public awareness are central to raising standards, as seen in KP Food Safety Authority.

Clear targets, regular public reporting and prompt action on consumer complaints would help the new minister turn the portfolio into visible improvements; such steps would also support wider food security goals, which face growing pressure from climate and economic factors.
