Ravi, Jhelum and Kabul rivers at flooding risk

Millions of people living along the Ravi, Jhelum, Kabul and Chenab rivers were evacuated as the Flood Forecasting Division, Punjab of the Pakistan Meteorological Department forecast flooding along the banks of major rivers in the Punjab province.

“River Chenab at Qadirabad and River Jhelum at Rasul are in Medium Flood Level, River Indus at Kalabagh, Chashma, Guddu & Sukkur, River Kabul at Nowshera and River Chenab at Khanki are in Low Flood level. River Chenab at Trimmu is likely to attain Medium to High Flood level on 30th August-2020. Flows are also likely to increase up to Medium to High flood level in the Nullahs of Rivers Chenab & Ravi during next 24 hours,” said the press release.

It further added that heavy rainfall may further aggravate existing urban flooding/water logging in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Mirpurkhas and Badin on Sunday and Monday. Heavy downpour may generate flash flooding in Sibbi, Kalat, Khuzdar, Lasbela and Dera Ghazi Khan during the period.

Moreover, the country’s major reservoirs have reached their full capacity as of Friday causing risks of medium-to-high flooding in the rivers.

The authorities said that both the Tarbela and Mangla Dams have filled to their brim warning the operators to take utmost care.

The forecast predicted additional rain-thundershowers with isolated heavy falls is also expected in Lasbela, Khuzdar, Awaran, Barkhan, Zhob, Musa Khel, Loralai, Kohlu & Sibbi Districts. Rain-thundershowers are also expected in Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Khanpur, Rajanpur, DG Khan, Multan, Khanewal.

The authorities were also put on red alert as rain/wind-thundershowers with isolated heavy to very heavy falls are also expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Tharparker, Nagarparker, Mirpurkhas, Islam Kot, Umar Kot, Sanghar, Sukkur & Larkana Districts.
