PTI admits to Gill’s ‘blunder’, stops short of condemning

Dr Shahbaz Gill’s contentious statement on a TV channel

While the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) senior leadership refrained from outright denouncing Dr Shahbaz Gill’s contentious statement on a TV channel on August 8, the party has agreed that he might have chosen better words or not said what he did.

Fawad Chaudhry refused to denounce Gill’s statement

PTI Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry refused to denounce Gill’s statement during a press conference on Thursday, instead suggesting that his colleague might have used better words.

“If he hadn’t been arrested, I would have denounced the statement. Condemning the statement now, after his detention, does not seem proper. Furthermore, efforts are being made to sever ties between Imran Khan and the army. Mr Khan has always worked for the growth of the country, and the army does as well,” he told reporters.

He stated that the “cabal of criminals” was attempting to sow strife between the PTI and the army, but that their evil plans would fail since the PTI chief desired a strong army.

Dr. Gill, the PTI chairman’s Chief of Staff, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon for reportedly resorting to ‘hateful words’ about the army in a TV broadcast on August 8, and charged under multiple sections of the PPC, including those linked to sedition and abetting mutiny.

Gill was brought into court at 8 a.m

During the press conference, Chaudhry was asked why the PTI leadership appeared to have distanced itself from Gill and not approached him in prison, and he disputed that the party had left its leader alone. “Gill was brought into court at 8 a.m., and his lawyer was already there. We don’t know where Gill is being held since police have been moving him every four to six hours. If any of you know where he is, please let me know and I’ll go meet him,” he added to the reporters.

He also criticised the alleged police conduct against Gill’s driver and his wife, who was picked up at her home.

PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi also stated that Gill should have been more cautious and should not have spoken what he did.
