Pakistan’s COVID-19 ratio worsens further

During the last 24 hours, a total of 7,195 persons were infected with the coronavirus in Pakistan, health authorities reported Tuesday.

Meanwhile, 17 people reportedly succumbed to the virus, taking the overall death toll to 29,122.

The number of Pakistan’s active cases has multiplied by seven in less than one month.

Similarly, the number of critical patients surged by 40 per cent in a month.

On Monday, Pakistan’s national positivity ratio clocked 12.53pc, with as many as ten cities reporting over a 10pc positivity rate.

Pakistan’s active cases have crossed the 80,000 mark. The last time Pakistan recorded this tally was September 13 last year.

Medics have said that the continuous trend of rising cases is due to the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Meanwhile, officials are of the opinion that Pakistan’s active cases will experience its peak in the second week of February.

“More restrictions will be locked this week to cater to this situation,” officials said.

As Pakistan struggles through the fifth wave of the coronavirus, courtesy of the highly-transmissible Omicron variant, people have been advised to adhere to the SOPs and maintain social distancing.

The data shows that ten cities have a positivity rate of over 10pc. According to the details, two cities, each in Punjab and Sindh, four in Khyber Pakhtun­khwa, and one in Azad Jammu and Kashmir clocking a 10pc positivity rate. Moreover, Islamabad also reported an over 10pc positivity rate.

Karachi has 37.23pc positivity rate, Muzaffarabad 25pc, Rawalpindi 17.36pc, Peshawar 26.43pc, Mardan 16.01pc, Lahore 15.02pc, Hyderabad 18.05pc, Islamabad 12.72pc, Abbottabad 13.32pc, and Nowshera 12.24pc.

Pakistan has conducted 107,585 tests per million population (PMP) and averages 35,341 tests per day. Islamabad has shown the highest number of PMP tests, followed by Sindh, which has conducted 147,071 tests PMP.

Balochistan has the lowest number of PMP tests – 37,282.
