Pakistan Singapore trade ties received fresh attention on Friday, when Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding friendly relations with Singapore. The meeting came as the two countries mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties this year.

Pakistan Singapore Trade Ties Reaffirmed on 60th Anniversary

Singapore’s Foreign Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan called on the prime minister at the Prime Minister’s House. Shehbaz praised Singapore’s economic transformation and its achievements in innovation and development, noting the importance Pakistan attaches to the partnership.

Both sides discussed ways to enhance bilateral trade and investment, naming the digital economy, financial technology, infrastructure development, logistics, small and medium-sized enterprises and services as key areas. These sectors match Pakistan’s priorities in skills, exports and modern finance.

The prime minister also stressed the value of bilateral and multilateral cooperation, particularly within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Closer engagement with Southeast Asia opens routes to wider regional markets.

Policy Path Beyond the Meeting

The two sides explored new opportunities for mutually beneficial economic cooperation and measures to strengthen people-to-people contacts. They also exchanged views on regional and international developments and reaffirmed their commitment to close engagement at bilateral and multilateral forums.

Turning these discussions into outcomes would need specific projects, regular follow-up and active involvement from the private sector, particularly SMEs and fintech firms. Pakistan’s growing digital talent and Singapore’s expertise in logistics and finance offer a practical basis for such partnerships, and a clear work plan built around the anniversary would help the relationship deliver visible benefits.
