UN Secretary-General António Guterres has lauded Pakistan Disaster Management strategy for Pakistan disaster management during a visit to the National Disaster Management Authority and its National Emergencies Operation Centre in Islamabad. The visit also demonstrated Pakistan’s work on improving disaster preparedness through technology, forecasting and early action.
Guterres welcomed the move from a largely reactive response model to a pre-emptive disaster risk management system. The approach is especially important for Pakistan, where floods, extreme weather and other climate-related hazards have proven major challenges for communities and infrastructure.
Country Utilises Technology for Pakistan Disaster Management
The UN chief was briefed on the integrated Pakistan Disaster Management architecture comprising the NEOC, National Geoinformatics Team and Global Risk Hub. The integration of satellite tracking, geospatial data and predictive analytics allows these systems to better detect new risks and improve their early warning capabilities.
The technology-based model allows authorities to monitor possible threats and accelerate the decision-making process before the disasters’ aggravation. Pakistan’s experience also shows how modern data systems can aid emergency services and strengthen preparedness across vulnerable regions.
Expertise in Pakistan Disaster Management for Global Use
Guterres pointed to Pakistan Disaster Management model as an example that could be useful for other countries facing growing climate and natural disaster risks. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent and disruptive, the UN secretary-general said it was important to replicate effective approaches internationally.
Pakistan has also offered the United Nations access to its technological capabilities and a free exchange of expertise. Such cooperation could strengthen international disaster preparedness while allowing Pakistan to contribute its experience and technical knowledge to global resilience efforts.
The engagement during Guterres’ October 6–8 Pakistan visit places Pakistan Disaster Management alongside broader discussions on climate resilience, regional issues and UN cooperation. Pakistan’s expanding use of early-warning technology and predictive systems provides a practical foundation for strengthening disaster preparedness at national and international levels.
