Lahore Traffic Police Propose Mandatory Side-View Mirrors For Motorcycles

motorcycle side-view mirrors

Lahore Traffic Police have proposed making motorcycle side-view mirrors a permanent feature on all bikes to improve road safety and reduce accidents. Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi sent an official letter to the Punjab Secretary of Industries requesting changes to manufacturing standards.

Motorcycle Side-View Mirrors Proposed for Lahore

The plan recommends permanently fixing the metal rods that support the mirrors, while the mirror glass itself would remain replaceable. Such a design would make it harder for riders to remove the fittings and easier to maintain them.

Data Behind the Safety Push

Traffic police data indicates that 62% of road accidents in Lahore happen when riders change lanes without checking behind them or signalling properly. A clear view of approaching traffic can help riders make safer decisions at busy junctions.

Lahore has more than 6.1 million motorcycles out of 8.2 million registered vehicles, and motorcyclists are involved in roughly 70% of fatal crashes. The scale of two-wheeler use in the city shows why a simple, low-cost safety measure could deliver wide public benefit.

Enforcement and Awareness Efforts

Punjab authorities and traffic police have already begun enforcement, with fines of around PKR 1,000 to PKR 2,000 for riders caught without side-view mirrors or functional indicator lights. The measures show a firm commitment to safer roads across the provincial capital.

The department is pairing fines with public awareness drives that educate riders on lane discipline and the dangers of removing factory-installed mirrors. Combining education with enforcement offers a balanced path, and standardised manufacturing rules could make compliance easier for every rider in the years ahead.
