MI5 Chief Warns Of Growing Far-Right Terrorism Threat In The UK

MI5 far-right terrorism threat

The MI5 far-right terrorism threat has become a central concern for British security services, according to Director General Sir Ken McCallum. Speaking at the agency’s annual address in London, he said extreme right-wing terrorism is a significant factor behind the UK terrorism threat level rising to severe in April.

MI5 Far-Right Terrorism Threat Rises in the UK

McCallum described the clearest trend of the past year as anti-immigration and anti-Muslim grievances turning into terrorist intent, often among younger people drawn in through the internet. MI5 investigated a radicalised 13-year-old in recent months, and that work reportedly helped an international partner prevent a lethal attack.

Pakistan’s Experience and UK Cooperation

Pakistan has long experience of confronting extremism and has made major sacrifices in counter-terrorism, which gives its voice real weight in global security discussions. Recent developments in Pakistan-UK ties include an institutional channel for regular consultations on political, economic, security and regional issues.

The warning on anti-Muslim grievance also matters to British Pakistani communities, who contribute widely to public life in the UK. Strong community relations and visible protection for places of worship and cultural life remain valuable for social harmony on both sides.

State Threats and AI Reshape Security Priorities

McCallum said MI5 now devotes roughly equal effort to state threats and terrorism, with Russia named as the leading aggressor and Iran-linked activity growing, including 50 arrests in the past year. He added that terrorists have been caught seeking to use AI for reconnaissance and attack planning, including AI-enabled drones, and that MI5 has launched an AI Threat Assessment Centre.

The policy challenge lies in protecting communities from extremist ideologies of every kind while holding online platforms accountable for radicalising material. Early intervention for young people, evidence-based prevention and intelligence sharing between partners are likely to matter most, and Pakistan and the UK could both gain from exchanging lessons on deradicalisation and digital safety.
