JFF Womens Tennis Brings 31 Players to Islamabad

The international field includes players from France, China, Russia, Japan, Thailand, Türkiye and Pakistan, among others. France’s Astrid Cirotte, ranked 624th in the world, is the top seed.

Pakistan’s Players in the Main Draw

The host nation has five players in the main draw: Ushna Suhail, Mahin Aftab Qureshi, Meheq Khokhar, Romaisa Malik and Hajra Sohail. Their presence gives local audiences a direct link to an event that draws competitors from several continents.

The opening round produced wins for Abhilasha Bista of Nepal, Serife Pelin Sari of Türkiye, Kamonwan Yodpetch of Thailand and Ru Xi Wu of China. Ksenia Laslutova, Liliya Piskun and Julia Khramtsova of Russia, along with Suzuna Oigawa of Japan and Moon Jeong of Korea, also moved ahead, with Khramtsova advancing after Ushna Suhail withdrew.

Hosting Women’s Tennis and Building Pathways

Staging a tournament of this size shows that Pakistan can host a diverse international women’s field with professional organisation. Sponsorship from the Junaid Family Foundation also reflects growing private-sector support for women’s sport.

The wider policy question concerns how such events can be turned into lasting pathways for young players. Regular ranking-point events at home, structured coaching and support for travel to international tournaments would help local players gain experience, and consistent investment of that kind could make Pakistan a dependable regional hub for women’s tennis.
