Matthew Breetzke Creates History with Record-Breaking ODI Debut

South African opener Matthew Breetzke made cricket history on his very first One-Day International (ODI) when he scored 150 runs. His outstanding inning could not stop South Africa from losing 6 wickets to New Zealand while playing in Lahore.

Breetzke embarked on his first ODI run at the tri-series against Pakistan when he hit 150 runs off 148 deliveries by striking eleven fours and five sixes. When playing for South Africa Breetzke scored more runs on ODI debut than any other batsman in history thus breaking Desmond Haynes’ previous ODI record from 1978. No player reached more than 127 runs during their ODI debut batting performance until Breetzke set the milestone.

Although he hit impressive numbers South Africa ended their innings at 304 runs with all players scoring 6 times. The opening batsmen Wiaan Mulder put away 64 runs from his 60 deliveries and Jason Smith made 41 runs for South Africa. Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke drove New Zealand’s bowling through two successful wicket pickups.
