National Assembly Kashmir resolution
The National Assembly Kashmir resolution was unanimously passed on 27 October 2026, stating that lasting peace and stability in South Asia depended on a peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. It was tabled by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs Engineer Amir Muqam and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon.
National Assembly Kashmir Resolution Passed Unanimously
The resolution reiterated that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir should be determined in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the free will of the Kashmiri people. On the same day, a similar supporting resolution reflecting unity across Pakistan’s legislatures was passed by the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly.
Call For International Action
The text rejected India’s unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 categorically and demanded their immediate reversal. It also called on the UN and world bodies to help implement the Security Council resolutions, to stop human rights abuses and to allow independent observers into Indian-administered Kashmir.
Such language is consistent with the peaceful tone of recent diplomacy, including PM Shehbaz’s call for a peaceful resolution during his meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the debate at the 81st UN General Assembly session. Islamabad also kept the focus on the Kashmir issue along with the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
Support For Azad Jammu & Kashmir
Parliamentary unity is also reflected in commitments at home, with the prime minister pledging federal resources for accelerated development in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It is easier to argue that Pakistan sees the region as a long-term responsibility if public services are better.
Dr Najeeb Naqi Khan’s election as President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir with 32 votes was another sign of political continuity. The orderly conduct of such an election reflects a functioning democratic process in the region.
Sticking To A Resolution
The key policy question is how to transform a unanimous resolution into practical results. Steady engagement at the United Nations, a well-documented record on rights concerns and access for independent observers would provide solid evidential support to Pakistan’s position.
Parliament and the foreign ministry could also arrange regular briefings to friendly capitals and international organisations. A mix of consistent diplomacy abroad and tangible development within Azad Jammu and Kashmir can help maintain the issue as credible and constructive.
