Pakistani film Wakhri
Pakistani film Wakhri is expanding its international presence this autumn, with theatrical and broadcast releases rolling out across France, the UK and Ireland, Australia, and Brazil. The award-winning thriller was written and directed by Iram Parveen Bilal, and more territories are expected to follow.
Pakistani Film Wakhri Widens Its Global Footprint
In France, the film screens in cinemas this October through Salon Indien, a travelling film society dedicated to South Asian women filmmakers. The release is run in partnership with the curatorial platform Contre-courants and François-Xavier Durandy.
Release Plans Across the UK, Australia and Brazil
The UK and Ireland rollout combines theatrical and broadcast distribution, including selection for a major UK festival showcase. Australia and Brazil will also see international theatrical and broadcast releases this season, giving the film access to very different audiences.
Such a spread shows that a Pakistani story can travel well beyond its home market. The wide mix of cinema, festival and television platforms also helps the film build a lasting audience rather than a single opening run.
A Story That Resonates With Audiences
Abid Merchant produced the film, and Faryal Mehmood stars as Noor, a widowed teacher who finds her voice online. The story is inspired by Pakistani women standing up to patriarchy, drawing on the life of social media star Qandeel Baloch.
Growing international interest in projects of this kind highlights the value of sustained support for local talent, as covered in Pakistan Women Documentary Fellowship: Eligibility Criteria, Application Process and Filmmaking Opportunities Explained. Training, funding and festival access would help more Pakistani filmmakers follow Wakhri onto the world stage.
