This came as a break from the severe air pollution that hit the provincial capital of Punjab since the rain gently started pouring. Due to the rains, most of the stations measured very low levels of pollution as compared to the previous days across all the regions.
AQI index values were slightly on the lower side, with Canal road recording the best value of 140 and Barki Road recording the highest value of 180. Similarly, other important sites such as Shahdara (179), Kahna (172), and Town Hall (175) also reported the enhancement of air quality parameters. This has arrived at a good time for Lahore, which over the past two months has been listed as the most polluted city globally.
Environmental expert Dr. Munawar Sabir while agreeing that natural rainfall has a positive effect said that artificial rain could have been used. He emphasized that the cloud cover present was conducive when artificial precipitation was being done between 12:00 AM until 4:00 PM which could have helped reduce the ever-constant problem of smog. The spokesman of the Punjab Environment Protection Department admitted that in addition to the rainfall, the efforts being made by the different departments have also played their part in the enhanced environmental status.
