Supreme Court to Hear Imran Khan's Petition on May 9 Riots and Protest Investigations

There has been a major legal escalation this week as the Supreme Court of Pakistan scheduled December 10th over a petition from the ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan. A seven-member constitutional bench will consider the formation of a judicial commission to probe the violence that erupted across the country after the PTI chairman’s arrest on May 9, 2023, and the “last push” or “final call” sit-in on November 26, Dawn reported.

This approach involves having carefully arranged Imran Khan’s five member negotiation team and indicating a structured approach at tackling the political tensions building within. The team includes great political figures such as Omar Ayub Khan and Salman Akram Raja, given two primary objectives: obtain the release of undertrial political prisoners and establish an independent judicial commission to transparently investigate the May 9 and November 26 incidents. The public declaration made by Khan on social media highlights his intent to push for political settlement through legal channels.

The former prime minister has not lacked words to give threats, he has made it clear that if his demands are not met, he’ll mobilize a complete civil disobedience campaign. Among the suggested actions, which in Khan’s opinion would allow pressuring the authorities, two can be attributed to political actions, namely – decreasing remittances and starting a boycott campaign. At the same time, another hearing to be held on December 11 will consider his petition accusing the current government of electoral fraud during the February general elections, which will only add fuel to the fire and pose a new threat to current governmental discourse.
