Kashmir is a beautiful area in the Himalayan mountains. It’s been a source of conflict between Pakistan and India since 1947 when both countries became independent from British rule. Both Pakistan and India control parts of Kashmir but each country says the whole region should belong to them. They have even fought wars over it.

What is ‘Accession to Pakistan Day’?

On 19 July 1947, there was a big conference in Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir, in which the Kashmiri leadership voted for accession to Pakistan. This happened because they were feeling an affinity towards Pakistan based on their religious, cultural, and geographic perceptions of identity. Every year, this day is remembered by many Kashmiris as a resolution still in effect, wanting to be part of Pakistan.

How is the Day Being Marked?

In Azad Jammu Kashmir, the part of Kashmir that Pakistan controls, the government has declared July 19 a holiday to enable people to participate in the special events being held to celebrate the day. Many programs and gatherings are planned throughout AJK.

The Present Situation in Kashmir

At present, the Indian-held part of Kashmir is plagued by violence. Several Indian soldiers and some militants were killed in recent fights. This has been going on for a long time. Since 1989, some groups in Kashmir have been fighting against Indian rule. They want Kashmir to either join Pakistan or be independent.

What Does Pakistan Say?

Pakistan says that the people of Indian-controlled Kashmir should decide for themselves how they want to run their lives. They want India to hold a vote, as the United Nations suggested a long time ago. India, however, doesn’t agree with this.

What Does India Say?

India says Pakistan helps the militant groups in Kashmir, but Pakistan says that isn’t true. India believes Kashmir should stay part of India.
