punjab-asks-for-army-and-rangers-help-during-muharram
The government of Punjab, a big part of Pakistan, has asked for help from the army and special police called Rangers. They want these extra forces to keep things safe and peaceful during the Muslim holy month of Muharram.
How Many Soldiers Are Needed?
Punjab’s leaders wrote a letter asking for 150 groups of soldiers and Rangers. They did this because the regular police said they needed help. The letter asks for 60 groups from the army and 81 groups from the Rangers.
Why Is This Happening?
Muharram is a very important time for Muslims, especially those who are Shia. During this month, there are big parades and gatherings. Sometimes, bad people have attacked these events in the past. The government wants to make sure everyone stays safe this year.
Plans in Other Places
In another city called Rawalpindi, they’re also getting ready. They’ll have 7,500 police officers and two groups each from the army and Rangers ready to help if needed. They’re also making plans to keep the traffic moving smoothly in the cities.
Why Security Is So Important
Every year, the police and army make big plans to keep people safe during Muharram. This is because there have been attacks before. For example, in 2009, a bomb killed more than 40 people at a Muharram parade in Karachi, another big city in Pakistan.
What Happens During Muharram?
Muharram is a month when some Muslims remember sad events from history. On the 9th and 10th days, there are big parades and gatherings. These days are when security is the tightest because the most people come out to participate.
By having extra soldiers and police, the government hopes to prevent any bad things from happening and let people observe Muharram peacefully.
