Pakistan is thinking about using digital currency.  Which shows they might be moving toward a more tech-focused Economy.. At the World Economic Forum (WEF) special meeting in Riyadh, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced that the government is contemplating the adoption of digital currency.

One of the reasons for this consideration is the significant portion of Pakistan’s economy that remains undocumented. Despite generating Rs9.4 trillion in annual revenue, a substantial part of the economy is unrecorded. Which is leading to inefficiencies and challenges in tax collection.  Pakistan want to address this issue and improve Economic Transparency by introducing Digital Currency

The Finance Minister Also Revealed that Pakistan has signed an agreement with McKinsey. McKinsey which is a leading GlobalManagement Consulting firm. McKinsey will assist with the huge Digitalisation of the Economy. This move is to set the broader Goal of introducing Digital Currency. It will provide a framework for more efficient Financial Transactions and better tracking of economic activities.

Green tax Economy

 The Finance Minister talks about the importance of creating a Green tax Economy and signaling Pakistan’s Commitment to Sustainable Economic practices. This is all part of a bigger plan to update Pakistan’s financial systems and make them work better.

The concept of digital currency is not entirely new to Pakistan. In July 2023, State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad mentioned that the central bank was working on a plan to launch the country’s first Digital Currency. Which will be known as the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The State bank of Pakistan wants to learn from other Central Banks’ Experiences with Digital Currency by implementing a careful strategy.
