Why Can’t Pakistan Bring Dr. Aafia Siddiqui Back?

The case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui is once again making headlines in Pakistan. Recently, a Pakistani judge questioned the government of Pakistan for sending a suspected terrorist to the US while failing to bring back Dr. Aafia Siddiqui , who has been in USA jail for many years.

Story of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui

Dr. Aafia  is a Pakistani woman who was arrested in 2008 from Afghanistan. The United State  government accused her of trying to attack American soldiers. She was taken to the United State, where a court sentenced her to 86 years in prison. Many people in Pakistan believe that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was innocent, noble and became a victim of false allegations.

For years, the government of Pakistan has promised to bring her back, but no real action has been taken so far.

Judge’s Questions on Government Decision

During a recent hearing, a judge from the Islamabad High Court  asked the government Of Pakistan why it agreed to hand over a terrorist to the US while failing to secure Dr. Aafia’s release. The judge questioned whether Pakistan had any written agreement with the United State for such extraditions.

The judge told that:

“If Pakistan is following the United State demands so quickly, then why is Dr. Aafia Siddique still in a US prison?”

This question raised serious concerns about the government’s way of dealing with such cases.

Public Anger and Reactions

The public in Pakistan is very emotional about Dr. Aafia Siddiqui case. People have been protesting for many years, demanding her return back to home. Many human rights organizations have also increased their voices, saying that Dr. Aafia Siddique deserves justice and fair treatment.

Social media is full of messages asking the government to bring Dr. Aafia home. People are saying if the Government of Pakistan can send criminals to the US, it should also demand the release of its own citizens.

Why is Dr. Aafia Still in Jail?

The biggest problem is that the United States considers Dr. Aafia Siddque is a criminal and doesn’t want to release her. Even though the Pakistani government has made some requests, no proper deal has been made between the two countries.

People say that Pakistan needs to show more seriousness and pressure if it really wants to bring Dr. Aafia Siddiqui back.
