A local court in Lahore recently gave the green light to extend the physical remand of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) president Pervez Elahi by two days, keeping him in Adiala Jail. The case against them revolves around illegal appointments. Former Punjab Chief Minister Elahi found himself behind bars after the court on September 19 ordered him to be sent back on fourteen-day judicial remand. The arrest of party chairman Imran Khan on May 9 is also included.

In this latest development, the court decided to extend Elahi’s remand after considering the anti-corruption establishment’s request for a 12-day physical remand. Earlier, he was on two-day physical remand. Officials say further inquiries are necessary, but Elahi’s lawyer rejected the claims, saying the alleged amount of Rs 3-4 million was too little for his client, and that he had never made “illegal appointments”. No money has been accepted.

This particular case focuses on alleged illegal recruitment. It has come to light that Elahi made 12 such appointments in the Punjab Assembly on Grade 17 posts. These appointments were made by altering records and using fake testing services. Officials are investigating these claims and maintain that these recruitments in the Punjab Assembly were actually fraudulent.
