Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has issued a new directive to officials to improve cleanliness in the province by 100 per cent within 15 days, focusing on Suthra Punjab cleanliness. The deadline is for the Suthra Punjab program and signals a strong push for visible results in cities, towns and villages.

The government has taken a policy decision to cancel the contracts of private solid waste management companies that perform unsatisfactorily. It will be the performance that determines who continues to provide sanitation services, not the presence of a contractor.

Sanitation in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan to be handed over to a self-operation model. With direct government control, these big cities are more accountable and can make decisions more quickly.

Country Coverage, Fines And Daily Cleaning

The authorities have been ordered to ensure the daily washing of main roads and to take stringent action against the accumulation of dust and dirt. Washing roads improves the aesthetics of a city and helps to reduce the dust that impacts the health of residents.

Fines will be imposed on those who litter after cleanups, throw garbage in markets, bazaars and grain, vegetable and fruit markets or leave waste on vacant plots. The penalties foster civic responsibility and are most effective when paired with the improved collection services promised by the programme.

Villages need to be cleaned on an alternate basis. The inclusion of rural areas in the regular cleaning demonstrates the programme’s intention to reach every community and not just the large urban centres.

Worker Welfare, Monitoring And Wider Governance

Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners should meet weekly with Field Monitoring Officers, use Key Performance Indicators and physically verify the machinery available. Clear, measurable targets and regular check-ins in the field make it easier to see what’s working and correct problems quickly.

Sanitation workers are also crucial to the plan, with instructions to ensure salaries are paid on time in all cities and localities. A motivated and reasonably compensated workforce is essential to keep our streets clean day after day.

The order fits a pattern of hands-on provincial governance more generally. Other initiatives include the province’s first electric taxi scheme, the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar free housing scheme and the provincial polio and dengue combat plan. Cleaner neighbourhoods also help to achieve public health goals, as better waste management helps to reduce the spread of disease.

Some of these have been accompanied by public debate, like the questions raised over the chief minister’s trip to China and the viral exchange when Naseem Shah called Maryam Nawaz “queen”. Such discussion is a normal part of public life, and with clear deadlines, measurable scores and prompt payment of workers, the sanitation drive has a solid basis for visible improvement across Punjab.
