Appealing to the nation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif urged Muslim devotees to offer special prayers for rain (Salat-ul-Istisqa) across the country on Friday. The main congregation was arranged by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, in Kohsar Block Lawn Islamabad, under the table of Dr. Shahid Rehman, Director of Research & References. Secretary for Religious Affairs Zulfiqar Haider contributed to the event along with officials from Maritime Affairs, National Health, Human Rights, and Inter-provincial coordination.
Public Meetings in the Federal Capital and Punjab
The biggest rally was held at Faisal Mosque Islamabad and a good number of the public was present at the occasion. In Punjab, the Auqaf Department arranged Namaz-e-Istisqa in more than 400 central mosques in the whole province. Officials of Auqaf Punjab laid stress on protective measures against smog and how the smog spreads during the prayers in Jamia Masjid Data Darbar while Secretary Auqaf Punjab Dr. Tahir Raza Bukhari offered the prayers.
The program was ended by Khateeb of Data Darbar Mosque Mufti Muhammad Ramzan Sialvi with special prayers for the development of the country and ease from smog hardship. The initiative was able to show how society can combat the issues of the environment using both spiritual and practical means.
KP’s Province-wide Response
Namaz-e-Istisqa was offered in all the districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Some mushaikhahs included the Mohabat Khan mosque, masjid e Zargooni, Sunheri mosque, and Speen Jumat in Peshawar city. Mohabat Khan mosque had prayers led by Chief Khateeb Maulana Tayyab Qureshi.
Similar activities were observed in different districts of the province such as DI Khan, Abbottabad, Bannu, Malakand, and Swat. The prayers said in the congregation were not only for rains to alleviate the drought situation but also prayed to be spared from the smog that is affecting Punjab suggesting that problems are not necessarily national but could be regional.
