About Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
Bhutto popularly became known as the “Quaid-e-Awam.” He was born on January 5, 1928, the only son of the late Sir Shah Nawaz Bhutto and he was destined to become one of the most important persons in making Pakistan’s future history ultimately its prime minister. His short-lived life ended with hanging on April 4, 1979.
The school days of Bhutto were mainly at reputed institutions. He started schooling at Cathedral High School, Bombay, before moving out to have the higher-grade education at USC, 1947. He then joined UC Berkeley in 1949, from where he graduated with a major in Political Science in 1950. After Berkeley, Bhutto went to Oxford and was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1953.
Back in Pakistan, Bhutto became a lawyer, soon establishing a reputation within political circles. In 1958, he became minister of commerce in President Iskander Mirza’s cabinet to become the youngest cabinet minister in General Ayub Khan’s government. For Bhutto, the saga of a political career continued in 1963 when he became foreign minister, filling in for Muhammad Ali Bogra. Each year on this day, his vision of Pakistan continues to be scribed in the legacies of Bhutto.
