The government of Sindh has announced a public holiday on September 17 (Tuesday) to mark Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the 12th day of Rabi ul Awwal. All government offices and educational institutions in the province will be closed on this day, according to a notification issued on Thursday.
This comes in line with similar announcements by the Punjab and federal governments, which have also declared September 17 as a public holiday to celebrate Eid Milad-un-Nabi.
Separately from the announcement of the holiday, the Sindh government has banned the riding of motorbikes with passengers in major cities, including Karachi, for safety reasons.
In addition, the Governor of Sindh, Kamran Khan Tessori, has actively promoted the importance of Rabi ul Awwal. He sent letters to the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Sindh on Thursday, stressing the importance of celebrating Eid Milad-un-Nabi with due religious zeal. The governor has proposed to declare 11 of Rabi ul Awwal as a public holiday as well.
Meanwhile, in a separate letter to the PEMRA chairman, Mr Tessori called for a ban on dancing, music and films during the holy month. He insisted that television channels and cable operators focus their programmes on the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), to promote positive values and guidance for the younger generation.
