The father of Sarah Sharif, a 10-year-old girl who was killed by two young men in Southall in 2001, was brutally assaulted by two prisoners at Belmarsh Prison on January 1 this year, and endured cuts to his throat. The attackers allegedly used a steel can lid as a tool in what the police suspect was a planned attack. The failure may have been fatal if prison staff did not intervene early enough; however, Sharif is still in critical condition.
The attack means that another layer has been added into the sad tale that began when the lifeless body of Sarah Sharif was discovered at her Woking home on, August 10, 2023. Irfan Sharif, his wife Beinash Batool, and his brother Faisal Malik were apprehended after they even checked in with one-way tickets to Pakistan. The case gained International attention especially when looking at the bitter custody history between Irfan and Sarah’s mother Olga Sharif who lost custody of their children after their 2017 divorce.
Police are yet to look into this assault as Sharif’s doctors work round the clock to treat him after they had to suture head wounds. The case has reignited issues of safety and measures for prisoners held at the maximum-security prison.
