Punjab University Commemorates Centenary of Lahore Cinema with International Conference

To celebrate the centenary of Lahore’s cinema industry, Punjab University (PU) hosted the first five days International Conference on Creative Arts at the College of Art and Design. Organized in association with the British Council and the Department of Graphic Design of PU, the event featured discussions among academia and the cream of the film industry about the future of Pakistani cinema.

At the conference, PU Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Ali announced that the university will collaborate with the industry professionals to set up a film academy. He also emphasized the need to give honorary PhDs to film industry contributors, and said that disconnection from modern trends had contributed to its decline. The guests included British artist Elaine Shemilt, celebrated director Syed Noor and renowned comedian Iftikhar Thakur.

Still in charge of his affairs, veteran filmmaker Syed Noor pointed out how it was the first of its kind in 53 years, as a means of promoting filmmaking among students, which he described as being unprecedented. Now universities provide a filmmaking degree but passion is still critical if you are to become a successful filmmaker, he said. It was an event to participate in which, besides scholars, Dr. Uzma Qureshi of Lahore College for Women University and Dr. Faleha Kazmi of Home Economics University took part.
