Despite serious money problems the Pakistan International Airlines decided to raise employee pay rates which stood frozen for four years. PIA’s Board of Directors voted to raise employee salaries because of rising prices and wants to keep good employees in the company. The flag-carrier company made this movement because PIA has suffered losses reaching 830 billion rupees.
The government rejected a single Rs10 billion bid to sell PIA because the airline privatization attempts faced challenges. During the Privatization Committee Meeting chaired by Senator Talal Chaudhry, Federal Minister Aleem Khan criticized the Federal Board of Revenue for preventing the sale of national enterprises through his Senate address. PIA failed to sell aircraft because the Federal Board of Revenue denied tax exemptions needed for this business deal.
The government cabinet met to examine the steps used at the beginning of the public sale on November 28, 2023. Once the government starts a privatization effort it must stay in effect without any changes. Despite running into financial and performance issues all parties remain concerned about the business yet it chooses to increase employee salaries.
