Pakistan Proposes Strict Digital Content Regulations with New PECA Amendments

Pakistan’s government presented new rules for the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act that fight fake news and online content through major penalties plus complete digital control features. Under the Electronic Crimes Prevention (Amendment) Act 2025, the government will enforce three-year prison sentences and PKR 2 million fines to combat misinformation circulation.

Under the new amendments control over social media platforms will go to the Digital Rights Protection Authority with extensive authority to oversee online activity. The new organization consists of IT officials together with government personnel from Information Ministries and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to handle complaints and remove unlawful content according to digital ethics standards. Through its 16 rules, the proposal bans online content that disrespects religion or incites hate plus anytime digital spaces violate national security. Social platforms must register within Pakistan to meet government content removal standards.

Despite government representatives saying new rules defend against false information government opponents fear officials will suppress content too much. The draft law entering Parliament represents an important first stage towards Pakistan’s full digital content rules.
