pakistan launches critical polio vaccination campaign amid outbreak concerns
A Critical Polio Campaign aimed at Protecting over 8.8 Million Children under Five Years old from the Paralyzing Poliovirus has kicked off in 26 Districts across Pakistan. This Campaign Responds to recent Polio Cases in Dera Bugti and Chaman along with the Detection of Wild Poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Sewage samples from Various Provinces.
Federal Secretary for Health Iftikhar Ali Shallwani Stressed the importance of Vaccinating Children emphasizing that Safeguarding them From Polio is a top Government Priority. With the Holy month of Ramadan Underway Polio teams are Deployed to Ensure Children receive Vital immunization Crucial for Building immunity against the Virus.
Dr. Shahzad Baig Coordinator for the National Emergency Operations Center for Polio Eradication Highlighted the Detection of WPV1 in Numerous environmental samples this year Mainly in Balochistan and Sindh leading to Paralysis in two Children in Balochistan. The Current Campaign targets districts with Virus Detections ahead of the upcoming Eid travel Season to Prevent further Spread.
The Polio Programme’s Rapid response System has already Conducted two Nationwide Campaigns earlier this Year with another Vaccination Drive Scheduled for late April. Recent Reports on March 21 revealed the Presence of the Poliovirus in Sewerage Samples from major Pakistani Cities including Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Chaman and Mastung.
Despite ongoing efforts Pakistan has Reported two Polio Cases this year, Highlighting the urgency of Vaccination Campaigns and enhanced Surveillance. Parents are urged to Cooperate with Vaccinators to ensure Children receive the necessary two drops of the Polio Vaccine Vital in Protecting them from lifelong Paralysis caused by the Poliovirus.
